Create photorealistic quilts one square at a time in this one-day workshop. Learn the techniques that make up Timna’s Barnyard Series of animal quilts. Using a photo and kit provided in class, the process of making a fabric mosaic using turned edge machine applique is explained. We will break down the construction process, explore color and value as design elements, and learn how to choose the right fabric for the right location. For intermediate level quilters. Leaf finishes at 8”x10”.

In Person Workshop: Stunning Improv Starbursts

Working with improv can be wonderfully freeing, yet the outcome can seem overwhelming to the senses. Choosing constraints at the outset of an improv project can not only lower the decision-making burden that can seem overwhelming, it can also ensure your composition finishes with dramatic flair. In this class, you will explore several different variations of improv triangles, and experiment with variables that will alter the look of each variation. You will then incorporate these blocks into a large wedge layout to make a 24” square wall hanging. No prior improv experience required. NOTE: this is an INTERMEDIATE class.

Student Outcomes:

● Students will be able to assemble improv triangle blocks using three different approaches, and gain confidence to experiment with color/value placement within these blocks to change the outcome

● Students will master a method of improv work flow that helps speed the process while ensuring each block retains a unique character

● Students will learn one method of assembling improv blocks into a quilt top incorporating negative space as a design tool

● Students will learn methods for dealing with long bias edges to minimize distortion

Planning Improv with Dramatic Negative Space

This is a one day 3 hour workshop

Design a high-impact improv quilt! Incorporating dramatic negative space with improv-pieced blocks can generate striking quilts with plenty of visual interest. Embark on your own design journey as Michelle guides you along the process every step of the way. Michelle will show you how to achieve these great designs with just paper, pencil, and a scientific calculator you can use on any smart phone! You will leave this class with a blueprint and plan of attack for your very own wedge improv quilt, as well as the skills necessary to plan any number of quilts based on a modified wedge layout. This is a no sew workshop for INTERMEDIATE quilters.

Student Outcomes:

● Students will learn how line and value can impact the composition of a quilt

● Students will gain confidence in the math skills needed to design and plan a quilt based on a modified wedge layout which can be applied to planning a quilt of any size, using wedges of any degree.

● The math knowledge students learn will allow them to determining the length of improv required to create the wedges, as well as the number and size of improv blocks needed to achieve the layout of their choice.

● Students will also learn valuable information on selection and sourcing of tools for cutting large wedges if they do not wish to make those cuts free-hand.

● Students will learn methods to handle long bias edges to minimize distortion when they piece any top that includes bias.

Required Materials:

● Scientific calculator (calculator on smart phone is fine)

In-person Workshop - Applique Animal Quilts

This is a two day in person workshop. 9-4 each day

Day 1: Learn techniques for hand or fusible applique while working on a 15 x12 portrait of a Great Horned Owl against a background of Mount Diablo.

Day 2: Design and work on your own animal applique portrait.
