Atomic Quilting

The sketch-like lines common in textiles and graphic design of the 1950s lend themselves readily to this fun, easy style of free-motion quilting. Students will learn to break down mid-century modern motifs into their component “atoms” to simplify quilting and minimize marking. While getting a feel for the technique, students will work on samples that can be turned into potholders or a runner. Incorporating hand stitching will also be explored, and we’ll look at some of the considerations for converting inspiring motifs from period design into effective quilting patterns. Though students should be familiar with setting up and using their machines for free-motion sewing, the imprecise nature of this style makes it accessible for all skill levels.
