 Zoom Workshop Coming Full Circle

The circle, a classic quilt form whose appeal has endured over the centuries, is a versatile form that can be rendered in a whole range of fascinating iterations. This class will explore three versions of this classic form and will offer multiple avenues for exploring them.

We will start with a new version of the classic String Fan Circle, paper pieced from multiple strips of fabric. The close juxtaposition of color and pattern in this version offers the opportunity to experiment with your favorite fabrics with fabulous results. The circles can be set in a square set or using optional hexagonal shoulders.

The second is a Swirly Circle, which involves curved piecing (don’t be scared). Eight curved sections come together into an elegant whole with great movement and focus.

The third is a Checkerboard Circle, paper pieced from constructed strip sets. All of these circles can be combined into one quilt or used separately. A larger version of the string fan and the checkerboard will also be provided for students who want to experiment with scale in their compositions. Patterns and instructions will be provided.

Techniques used: Students will employ basic paper piecing techniques for two of the blocks. Curved piecing will be employed for the third block, and students will learn how to bring multiple points together smoothly. Tips on combining color and pattern will be offered throughout the workshop to build color competence and confidence.

Skill Level: This class is appropriate for confident quilters at an advanced beginner or higher skill level. The quilt involves basic paper piecing and curved piecing. Prior experience with these techniques is helpful but absolutely not required.
